Open Your Mind To The Idea Of Mentorship

Open Your Mind To The Idea Of Mentorship

As business owners, we have a lot going on, and sometimes it can be very easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of what we have going on every day. It’s important to slow down and pay attention to those who look up to us – especially when they are seeking advice.

This happened to me recently. While answering a few emails and trying to pump out an extra article for a client of Edit This®, I came across the following email from a college student.

“I recently moved back home to find a job and put down roots in the Denton area. My first night in town, I went out to eat with my family and picked up a May-June issue of Argyle Living in the bathroom. (True story, haha!) I liked the design and content of the publication overall. But I was deeply inspired by your “Hey, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!” article. The storytelling was engrossing, the language crisp and your faith unashamedly on display. After I finished reading, I brought the magazine to my grandmother and said, “That’s where I want to be in 10 years.”

Aside from where he “found” my article, I was instantly bowled over by the kind words. He went on to ask me if I’d be willing to meet him in person to review his resume, talk shop, and pick my brain on everything writing and editing related.

Naturally, I said yes. My schedule was still insanely busy, but it was important in my mind that I not waste time and find a way to meet with this young man. To make a long story short, our meeting went great, and while I do not have any opportunities for him right now with my own company, I did pass his name on to the folks at Murray Media Group, who I obviously do a lot of work for and know very well. Who knows, maybe the warm handoff will help kick-start a budding career.

That’s my goal, anyway. And it gives me a sense of pride knowing I played a role in that.

Thanks for reading!
